How to network your way to a board role

Cassie and I both enjoy meeting new people, so networking has always come naturally to us. Having lived and worked offshore and intentionally transitioning into the start-up and investment communities, we recognise the significance and benefits that networking can bring. We also realise the value in not being afraid to put your hand up and admit that you don’t know something or to ask for help.

However we know that is not always the case for everyone. Building a network from scratch can be challenging. But with dedication and effort, you can create a strong and valuable network. Remember it’s not always about asking for favours or opportunities, it should be a balanced exchange, so be considerate and thoughtful in how you can give value back.

Here are some steps to help you build a network from zero:

Define Your Goals and Purpose: Clarify why you want to build a network and what you hope to achieve through it. Having a clear purpose will guide your networking efforts and help you focus on the right connections.

Identify Your Target Audience: Determine the types of individuals or groups you want to connect with based on your goals. Consider professionals in your industry, potential mentors, peers, local community members, or individuals with shared interests.

Leverage Social Media and Online Platforms: Utilise social media platforms like LinkedIn to connect with people in your target audience. Make sure your profile and experience is up to date.

Attend Networking Events: Look for networking events, local meetups and social gatherings related to your interests or industry. These events provide a more casual setting for networking and can lead to organic connections. We recommend Start-up grind, TIN events and Kiss my Saas. If you hate traditional networking events consider using platforms like Badger or coffee’s with people you’re most comfortable with.

Volunteer and Get Involved: Participate in volunteer activities or community events. Volunteering not only allows you to contribute to a cause you care about but also exposes you to new people and potential networking opportunities via things you are passionate about. Reach Out Cold: Don't be afraid to approach individuals you admire or want to learn from, even if you don't have an existing connection. Craft personalized and genuine messages to introduce yourself and a clear ask on why you want to connect.
