Gender Diversity on NZ Start-up Boards

This document summarises our best effort at obtaining a market ‘pulse’ for gender diversity on start-up boards in New Zealand.

The project has been an ecosystem effort between OnBoard and many local venture investors.

In a review of 282 local venture backed companies we found:

  • 54% of companies do not have any females on their board.

  • Females hold 19% of total board seats.

  • Of the female directors, 43% are independent directors. The balancing 57% are founder/CEO/executive directors (34%) or investor directors (23%).

  • Women hold 29% of total independent director board seats.

We look forward to collaborating further on ways to support start-up boards in New Zealand.
